Sundowns Reclaim Top Spot, But for How Long?
Mamelodi Sundowns reclaimed their position at the summit of the Betway Premiership on Tuesday night following a clinical 2-0 victory over Orbit College at Olympia Park.
The win marks a seventh consecutive league triumph for the Brazilians, moving them three points clear of rivals Orlando Pirates.
Despite a frustrating first half where Iqraam Rayners had an early goal ruled out for offside, the defending champions found their breakthrough in the 48th minute.
Miguel Reisinho netted his first league goal for the club, sweeping home a cushioned header from Nuno Santos.
The result was sealed at the hour mark when Rayners converted a penalty. This was his 10th league goal of the campaign, earned after Khuliso Mudau was fouled in the area.
Reflecting on the performance and the rotation of his squad, Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi praised the tactical discipline of his side. “It was important for us to remain patient,” Mngqithi noted in post-match remarks.
“We knew the goals would come if we kept our structure. Getting Miguel his first goal is a big plus for the confidence of the group as we head into the CAF Champions League.”
Orbit College remains in the relegation playoff spot after suffering their 13th defeat of the season. Sundowns now shift their focus to continental glory, hosting Stade Malien this Friday.
They currently hold a three-point lead over the Buccaneers. While both teams have played the same number of games (20), the advantage could be short-lived. Orlando Pirates are scheduled to host Richards Bay at Orlando Stadium tonight.
